Starting Monday, May 18, Merriam police officers will write you a ticket if they stop you and see that you’re not wearing a seatbelt.
To reduce the number of preventable deaths, officers will enforce both the Kansas Safety Belt Use Act and the Kansas Child Passenger Safety Act. The increased police presence and enforcement is part of the two-week 2020 Kansas Click It or Ticket campaign.
The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) said the state’s overall seat belt compliance rate is 85%, with those in rural counties less likely to buckle up than those in urban counties.
The Click It or Ticket campaign runs through Tuesday, May 31, and it’s supported by a KDOT grant.
