The "FIZZ" is back in Merriam!

If you are over 50, you probably remember going to the soda fountain at your local drug store.  Maybe you can recall what a Green River, a Black & White, or a FRESH limeade really is?  If you're from the East Coast, you might be familiar with an "Egg and Cream".  Well, if memories are flooding back and your taste buds are craving "the burn", you'll want to take a trip down Merriam Drive to visit the newly opened Georgetown Pharmacy Old Time Soda Fountain and Espresso Shop, located at 5605 Merriam Drive.

Owner and pharmacist, Dennis Hendershot recently completed the near two-year renovation, located inside the Pharmacy.  Just like back in the old days, where kids would twirl on the round metal stools at the counter slurping the last of their milk shake from the bottom of a REAL glass, you too can take a twirl while enjoying a number of tasty treats including milk shakes, banana splits, floats, carbonated sodas, ice-cold milk or an espresso or coffee.

"All of our soda fountain beverages are made fresh in front of your eyes, the old-fashioned way.  The shop was designed to mimic the soda fountains of yesterday, bringing back memories or maybe to start new ones," comments Dennis.

The shop is currently open during Pharmacy hours of Monday through Friday from 9 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm.  Group tours can also be arranged through the Merriam Visitors Bureau for $3.00 per person, which includes a brief presentation about the history of soda fountains and a special soda fountain treat (seating for up to 25 at one time).

car show logoThe Annual Turkey Creek Car & Motorcycle Show is officially one week away, Saturday, September 8 in downtown Merriam.  To-date, committee members report 88 pre-registered entries with more rolling in each day.  Last year's event boasted close to 200 entries with plenty of door prizes and fun for all.

This year's event will be held rain or shine at the Merriam Marketplace at 5740 Merriam Drive and will feature all styles and classes of cars--plus "Biker Alley" for motorcycle enthusiasts.  Registration begins promptly at 8:00 am and the show runs all day.  The cost to register a car is $20 and $25 on event day.

The first 200 entries will receive a car show dash plaque, t-shirt and goodies from local businesses.  Concession vendors will be on site to serve breakfast and lunch and music will be provided by "the Candy Man."  A special fundraiser for Alex's Lemonade Stand will also take place this year, so come on out and join the festivities in downtown Merriam.
