inspire by example logoFormer President Bill Clinton once said, "citizen service is the very American idea that we meet our challenges not as isolated individuals, but as members of a true community, with all of us working together.  Our mission is nothing less than to spark a renewed sense of obligation, a new sense of duty, a new season of service."

To recognize those who provide volunteer service to the Merriam Vistiors Bureau, a special recognition luncheon has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at 11:30 a.m. at the Merriam Historic Plaza.  Those who currently serve in a volunteer capacity for the Visitors Bureau are invited to attend.  Lunch is provided with a special guest presentation about the importance of volunteering and the impact volunteers have in our community.

RSVP's are required for this event at 913-403-8999 and due by 4/16/07.
Flint Hills and Heaven

flint hills printThe beautiful landscape and rolling hills of Kansas is now on display at the Merriam Visitors Bureau.  Entitled, "Flint Hills and Heaven", this beautiful 30x36 pastel print by artist Jean Terry was recently awarded 3rd Place in the annual Heartland Artist Exhibition held at the Irene B. French Community Center Art Gallery.

Purchased and donated by the Merriam Parks, Recreation and Community Center Foundation, this colorful print will now greet those who visit the Merriam Historic Plaza & Visitors Bureau office.  Thank you to Jean Terry and to the Foundation for donating this Kansas-inspired beauty!

Tourism:  America's Front Door

ntw logoThat's the theme of the 24th annual National Tourism Week (May 12-20th, 2007), and the Merriam Visitors Bureau will be participating on Thursday, May 17, 2007 by welcoming visitors to our front door!

Visitors to the Merriam Historic Plaza will be treated with morning coffee and doughnuts from 8:00-10:00 am.  Those who sign-up to receive our bi-monthly e-newsletter will also be entered into a drawing for a $50 gas card and every visitor will leave with a free visitor guide, postcard and special treat!

The purpose of National Tourism Week is to promote a wider understanding of travel as a major U.S. industry that is vital to the economic stability, security and perception of the United States and one that contributes substantially to its cultural and social well being.

National Tourism Week was established in 1983 when the U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution designating the week to be celebrated in May 1984.  More on national tourism week...
